Wizardry on the NES is a console adaptation of the influential computer role-playing game Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. Set in a classic high-fantasy world, players assemble a party of adventurers—choosing from classes such as Fighters, Mages, Priests, and Thieves—to explore a deadly, monster-filled dungeon beneath a castle.
The objective is to descend through multiple maze-like levels in search of the powerful amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Along the way, players engage in turn-based combat, manage spells and equipment, and navigate dangerous traps that can permanently eliminate party members.
Unlike many early console RPGs, Wizardry is known for its high difficulty, deep character customization, and first-person dungeon-crawling perspective. Its complex mechanics and unforgiving design helped define the role-playing genre and influenced countless RPGs that followed.
